You must have heard the story of Veerappan whose full name is Koose Muniswamy Veerappan. He was nearly active for about thirty years and was involved in the kidnapping and murdering of people and also in the smuggling of ivory and sandalwood in forests of different states like Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. He is one of the most famous as well as feared bandits in the history of India because of his long career and the skills to evade the police.

Childhood and early life

It can be said that Veerappan was inspired by his father when he was only a child. He was exposed to the criminal world at a very young age as his father had relations with SeviGounder criminal and also was a known poacher. At a very early age, he started helping in the criminal activities of SeviGounder by killing innocent animals and also started smuggling under his influence.

Incidents that made Veerappan one of the most feared bandits

There are a lot of famous incidents of Veerappan which made him the most famous and feared bandit of Indian history. We have listed some of those incidents here.

  • The kidnapping of the actor Rajkumar - You must be well aware of the famous Kannada actor Rajkumar. On the 25th of August 2000, Veerappan kidnapped him along with two other people and his son in law when they were all in DoddaGajanur attending the housewarming function. A magazine editor of Tamil Nadu called R. Gopal helped with the negotiation process where Veerappan made his demand to make Tamil the official language of the state and also for justice in the Cauvery Water Dispute. The famous actor was released in November 2000 after a hold of 108 days.
  • The Palar Blast - Veerappan murdered a Bandari person because he thought that he was a police informer. Because of this incident on 9 April, 1993 Veerappan installed the bombs under the vehicle in which the police team was travelling to investigate. This blast killed a total of 22 police and occurred near Palar.
  • The special task force - In the year 1992, the government of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu allied with special task forces to catch Veerappan and managed to take down his lieutenant. After three months of this incident, he attacked the police station of Ramapura and killed various police officers.
  • The kidnapping of Nagappa - In the year 2002 Veerappan was able to kidnap the Karnataka former minister. Joint special task force try to release him but the minister was found dead in the force after three months.

The death of Veerappan

A special task force of Tamil Nadu launched an operation called Cocoon to stop the criminal activities of Veerappan and his partner. The operation was focused to bring Veerappan out of the forest because he knew the forest well. According to a report the operation was planned for about 10 months but the execution took only three weeks and the final operation was just 45 minutes.

Is ‘Pushpa’ inspired by the life of Veerappan?

After the release of the trailer, there had been rumours that Allu Arjun’s ‘Pushpa’ movie is inspired by the life of Indian bandit Veerappan. The look of Arjun in the movie, his dressing style and even the storyline resembles the sandalwood smuggler Veerappan‘s story.
